The use of ATMs began fifty-six years ago. On June 27, 1967, the world's first ATM was installed in a branch of Barclays Bank in Enfield, North London. The inventor of such a machine was John Shepherd-Barron of Scotland. Actor Reg Varney, who starred in the British TV comedy show 'On the Buses', was the first person to withdraw cash from the machine. ATM machine has brought a revolutionary change in the field of banking services. From time to time other services besides cash withdrawal have been made available through ATM. ATM service started in India in 1987, twenty years after the first machine was installed in London. There are more than 35 lakh ATMs in operation across the world. According to Reserve Bank of India data for the month of April 2021, there are more than two lakh 14 thousand ATMs in India.
