KANTEIMUNDI BRINJAL


Nayagarh 1/9/2023 : Gi tag has been found for the famous KANTEIMUNDI BRINJAL in the area of Khandpada Block kantilo. In February 2021, an application was submitted to the Geographical Indication Tag Authority, Chennai.
Nilamadhav Agriculture Organization, Banpur, Sidhamula applied for GI status. Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) collaborated in this. District Collector Rabindra Nath Sahu has informed about this . As the first product of the district, this bringal has received GI recognition, and the district has expressed happiness. Now there is hope that the famous Nayagarh Chenapada will get GI status. The first cultivation was started in the areas of Dhanchangda, Lakshmiprasad, Kumundi, Fategarh of Bhapur block including Badbanpur, Ratanpur of Kanteimundi Bean Khadpada block. Later on, it was cultivated in different parts of the district. The said brinjal has been cultivated for more than a hundred years.
   The local farmers named it as Kanteimundi brinjal after the Nilamadhab Kantilo. It is cultivated in both Kharif and Rabi seasons. When compared to other brinjal, it is full of thorns starting from its stem. The weight of these brinjal ranges from 25 grams to 50 grams. The abundance of seeds in beans makes them very tasty. After harvesting it is stored for about 2 weeks. The height of the tree is between 61 to 65 cm, one tree produces 8 to 10 brinjal .
District horticulture, revenue department along with Scientist Anil Kumar Swain of Nayagarh Agricultural Science Center gave special support in getting the said brinjal GI status. After receiving the news of GI status, there is a lot of happiness among the farmers.
